Living in the past

August 14, 2003
Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz : Rs 38,000

Jan 2004:
PlayStation 2 : Rs. 15,990

Feb 2005:
iPod shuffle (1GB): Rs 12,400

today:
Intel Pentium 4 3 GHz : Rs.2699.00
PlayStation 2 : Rs. 6,990
iPod shuffle (1GB): Rs. 2,700

Yeah but today we have core2duo, iPhone, Playstation 3, right???? If we are prepared to live in the past(which is not so far behind considering the pace of gadgets evolution) the price comes down manifold, IOW if we want to be on the bleeding-edge, we need to pay more:(

So If you are a consumer, better live in the past and if you are a business, then try to lead the race, to charge a premium from your customers. BTW why all this rant? Bought a PS2 :-)

BUT PS2 doesnt feel like a gadget of the past. It might be good enough if you do not have a HDTV, for SDTV it is good enough(gr8). The first game I bought is "God of War 2". Though I hate both the God and War, I like God of War 2. I usually play driving sims and split-screen racers. But I got GOW2 just coz Gran Turismo & Burnout were not available at that Sony world.

You spent 7k for playing games ?

Skipping rope: 200
Sports shoes: 2K
Trekking Kit: 2K

Swimming Annual Membership: 6K (after one year you wont use the PS anyway)

Any game you want to play, you can play it in your computer. You don't really need a gaming-console. And sports are better than games ;)

In fact more than 7k, considering the cost of the games(each Rs.500 ~ Rs 1300) + additional controller + memory card etc... Also I need a TV/Power to play! If I had more Rs, I would have gone for a HDTV+PS3+games(each ~Rs.2800) which would run in to Lakhs!

Even yesterday I had a great time, spent >3 hours, without even realizing it.

Regarding games on a PC. Yeah I was a PC gamer before. But upgrading your PC to play the latest and greatest is much more costlier affair. Also platformers are gr8 examples of how the HW can be pushed to the limits, but PC games cannot be as the variety of HW is too much. Consoles are examples of standards, so that people can develop better software!! [but they are not open :( ]

Sports are better than games!! Yeah food is better than liquor/chocolates/sweets, playing cricket is better than watching cricket, commuting by auto/bus/walk is better than Merc... ;-) Better differs between people.

But to me the purpose of life is entertainment and not feeling bored. There is no other better act in life than entertaining someone.

BTW I got in to gaming, by actually wanting to develop games. I recommend you to try to develop some game to get an idea of what gaming is.
